You might have heard about many packaging and courier companies like FedEx, or DHL. But did you know that packages are charged based on the dimensions of the content?

What is Dimensional Weight?

Dimensional weight is a measurement of a product that is often used by shipping and courier companies to find the actual cost of delivering the product to the required place.

It is often called DIM weight and is one of the most used pricing techniques by major shipping companies like FedEx, DHL, and UPS to determine the price of shipping content. The different shipping companies, set up their prices or fees based on the dimensional weight of the package.

Dimensional Weight Formula

Dimensional weight = (Length * Breadth * Height) / Dimensional weight divisor set up the shipping company

How do you calculate Dimensional Weight?

Here we have displayed how the dimensional weight of a package is calculated.

  • First, you need to find the length width, and height of your package. In case your package is round, then you should consider the longest dimensions on each side.
  • Ensure to round up the weights if they are in decimals.
  • Now find the product of these metrics to find out the cubic size of the package. For example, if a package has 18*18*18 inches dimensions then 5832 cubic inches is its cubic size.
  • Next, divide the cubic size of your package by the DIM divisor. It is usually the numbers set by the freight carriers. So, you also need to learn what is the DIM number of your shipping company.

For instance, if a freight carrier’s DIM divisor is 166, divide your package’s cubic size by this number. In the above case if we divide 5832 cubic inches by 166 cubic inches per pound, then it comes out to be 35.13 pounds.

Now, this is the actual dimensional weight of your package, and based on this number your shipping company will determine the charges. Again, if the dimensional weight does not cross their threshold for charging shipping rates based on dimensional weight, then the actual weight of the package is considered.

To simplify it more, if your shipping company charges any package above 40 pounds, then the shipping rate for the above-calculated package will be based on its actual weight and not the dimensional package.
